Description
Following the popular cats stamp issue, Vanuatu Post releases an issue on the Dogs of Vanuatu in conjunction with Sam's Animal Welfare Association.
Founded in 2005 in Port Vila, Sam's Animal Welfare Association works with the community in Vanuatu to provide animal welfare services and education programmes especially in schools, on the humane treatment of all animals in Vanuatu and the many benefits of owning such pets. Such benefits include companionship, safety and responsibility. The Association was developed from humble beginnings after a very generous donation from a widow in memory of her and her husband’s shared love of animals. Sam was their most beloved dog and the namesake for this charity.
Made up of a group of dedicated volunteers, the Association is involved with all pets and covers such areas as animal transport, community engagement, education and training and fund raising. One of Sams' key aims is to provide de-sexing of pets of families in
the community that could not otherwise afford the procedure, and to educate the community on how to look after and manage animals humanely. They work closely with the Port Vila veterinary clinic. Sams' is a not-for-profit charity registered under the Vanuatu Charitable Associations Act and is a member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals. Funds are raised via a book exchange scheme in Vanuatu and through "yellow box" donations. These boxes are located throughout Port Vila and Vanuatu Post now has such a box in the Main Post Office in support of this worthy project. Their aim, like that of the ni Vanuatu, is to ensure that Vanuatu’s best friends are generally healthy, happy and well cared for.
