No other sporting event captures the world's imagination like the FIFA World Cup ™. In the 1920s a team led by the innovative Jules Rimet, are credited with the original idea of bringing the world's strongest national football teams together to compete for the title of World Champions.

The FIFA World Cup™ is the most important competition in international football and the world's most representative team sport event. Organised by the Federation Internationale de Football Association, the FIFA World Cup™ is contested by the national football teams of FIFA member nations. Since 1930, the 16 tournaments have seen only seven different winners.

While the championship is awarded every four years, it is more of an ongoing event as the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over the three years leading up to the final rounds. The finals tournament involves 32 national teams( in 2006 from six continents), competing over a four-week period in a previously nominated host nation. These games are the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world. An accumulated audience of approximately 40 billion people is expected to watch this year’s tournament, which kicks off in Germany on June 9 2006.
